Get On Board

Our board matching service.

If you want to serve on the board of a Long Island nonprofit organization, or if you want to find new candidates to serve on your organization’s board, we can help. Get on Board is a free recruitment and matching service which connects nonprofit boards with individuals seeking an opportunity to serve.

The Process

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership reviews applications from individuals and organizations and matches them based on their mutual criteria and interests.  Once we make a potential match, we send information about the organization and its board to the individual. If the individual would like to contact one, some or all of the organizations, the Center can make an e-intro or the individual can reach out themselves.

Nonprofit organizations that participate in Get on Board represent a wide range of missions. These organizations are actively seeking to develop, build, and diversify their existing boards, and are looking for the following qualifications from board members:

  • Live and/or work on Long Island
  • Offer diversity in life experience, age, ethnicity, and skills
  • Have a passion for the mission of the organization
  • Interested in, and enthusiastic about board service and volunteerism
  • Able to participate at least 3-5 hours a month in board activities

» Submit your individual application

» Read a New York Times article about the value of board service from a corporate perspective

Nonprofits must be located in and serving one or more communities within Nassau County or Suffolk County. We review all applications individually and may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. General eligibility requirements include:

  • Current status as a 501(c)3 or a fiscally sponsored organization
  • Mission statement
  • Financial statements for two previous years
  • Active Board of Directors with at least four members
  • Established governance policies and procedures for their board (e.g. by-laws, clear board expectations, etc.)

» Submit an organizational application
